About our leather

At Tanvara, leather is never treated as a commodity. It is the foundation of everything we create.

We work exclusively with carefully selected hides sourced from regions with long-standing leather craftsmanship, where material knowledge is built through generations.

Grade A Hair-On Baby Calf From Tuscany, Italy

Our hair on leather is made from Grade A baby calf hides sourced from Tuscany, Italy — a region internationally recognized for its tanning expertise and uncompromising standards.

The natural hair is preserved, giving each hide depth, texture, and individuality.
Subtle variations in tone and pattern are inherent to the material and are considered part of its character, not imperfections.

Only hides that meet strict requirements for integrity, durability, and finish are selected for production.

Vegetable Tanning Process

All leather used at Tanvara is vegetable tanned.
Vegetable tanning is a traditional process that uses natural tannins extracted from plant materials such as bark, wood, and leaves.
The method is slower than chrome tanning and requires patience, experience, and careful control.

Over time, the leather develops a natural patina, responding visibly to use, light, and handling. This process preserves the material’s structure and allows it to age in an honest and unforced way.

Selection & Integrity

Each hide is individually inspected by hand before use.
We evaluate grain structure, suppleness, and natural consistency.
Only leather that will age with restraint and dignity is approved. No artificial correction. No unnecessary treatment.

A Considered Material Choice

All leather used at Tanvara is a by-product of the meat industry.
No animals are raised specifically for their hides. Leather remains a material with ethical complexity, and we do not present it as impact-free. Our responsibility lies in using what already exists with respect, restraint, and long term intention creating pieces meant to last.

Designed to Evolve

Leather is a living material.
With time and use, it develops a patina unique to its owner — a quiet record of wear, care, and life. This evolution is intentional. It is what gives Tanvara pieces their permanence.
